CASE STUDY: PILOT FOR POLYMERIZATION AND SPINNING OF ACRYLONITRILE FOR CARBON FIBER DEVELOPMENT

  • Technological development (TD) seeks to obtain new products, as well as improving existing products, exploring new functionalities and also optimizing production processes.

  • TD is an activity linked more to companies than to academia, which is responsible for training quality professionals, as well as carrying out basic research with a low TRL.

  • Companies generally work with a focus on new markets in order to improve their results.

  • The starting point is the market potential for a given product. In this particular case, the carbon fiber market, which by 2023 is estimated at 20,000 Mton and by 2030 at around 150,000 Mton, i.e. very significant growth, as will be seen below.

  • The DT's basic activity is to generate knowledge, a task that cannot be carried out on industrial equipment. It is necessary to have pilot plants that can reproduce the industrial plant without interfering with the production rhythm.

  • A proposal is presented on how to conduct experiments in pilot plants to generate knowledge on the polymerization and spinning processes of acrylonitrile copolymers, which can be transformed into carbon fibres.

  • It is important to note that the great advantage of these pilot plants is that they can exploit the entire sample space available.

  • This proposal can be adapted to other situations in different production processes. The idea here is not to be exhaustive, but to explore most of the phenomena involved in these industrial processes.
